Why Travel Tuesday: The Taj Mahal

(Every Tuesday, I will be featuring a photograph from a place I have gone to, a photograph which I believe will inspire others to go out and see the world for themselves. For this week, Why Travel Tuesday features one of the greatest monuments to love ever built by man: The Taj Mahal.)

Taj Mahal, Agra, India
The ultimate monument to love: The Taj Mahal

Built in the mid-1600s, the Taj Mahal in Uttar Pradesh, India is a mausoleum made with white marble decorated with the finest Mughal carvings and inscriptions. It was constructed by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as the final resting place of his favorite wife Mumtaz Mahal. I traveled to the Taj Mahal in a cool, misty morning and the soft light bouncing off the white marble gave the structure a pastel glow. I have seen photos and footage of the Taj Mahal a thousand times growing up, but you know what? They don't compare to seeing the structure up close. If there is an enduring and grand monument to love that is greater than the Taj Mahal, then the world is yet to see it.

What other monuments to love have you encountered in your travels?
