Why Travel Tuesday: Buddha Tooth Relic Temple in Singapore

(Every Tuesday, I will be featuring a photograph from a place I have gone to, a photograph which I believe will inspire others to go out and see the world for themselves. For this week, Why Travel Tuesday features a photo from a stunning corner of Singapore: Buddha Tooth Relic Temple.)

Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, Singapore
The stunning golden interiors of Singapore's Buddha Tooth Relic Temple in Chinatown

Right after landing in Singapore, I headed straight to Maxwell Food Center in Chinatown to begin my new food discoveries in this little island nation. Surprise! I had the famous chicken rice of Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice. As soon as I gobbled up my plate, I went out into the road and came upon the imposing façade of the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple. It reminded me of the grand structures I saw in the Three Pagodas Temple in Dali, a hippie haven of a town in Yunnan, China. No surprises there. Both temples employ Tang dynasty architectural styles. However, the interiors of Buddha Tooth Relic Temple was something else. Whereas most I've seen tended to be simple and austere, this one in Singapore was ornate and opulent. Gold was everywhere. It was quite the sight indeed.

Which temple in Asia stunned and surprised you? Where is it?
