Why Travel Tuesday: Mountains of Mae Hong Son

(Every Tuesday, I will be featuring a photograph from a place I have gone to, a photograph which I believe will inspire others to go out and see the world for themselves. For this week, Why Travel Tuesday features the view from a above the clouds at sunrise in the Mountains of Mae Hong Son.)

I specifically planned to explore the mountains of Mae Hong Son province in northern Thailand this cool and dry season and let me tell you, it is dry and sometimes unbearably cool (below 8°C at nights). I am staying in a place called Cave Lodge, which reminds me of the mountain lodges I stayed at in Nepal. After a day of adventure in the mountains, everyone gathers around the fire and shares their harrowing stories, in our case, the story of our unnecessarily long trek up a small peak, which we would have reached earlier had we found the right trail. I have so much more stories about this place: about how it's more Yunnanese than I expected, about our unnecessarily harrowing trek, and about the awesome caves around the mountains of Mae Hong Son, which I have yet to see. Stay tuned!

Have you been to the mountains of Mae Hong Son? Do you like traveling in mountainous regions of the countries you visit? Which ones has the most spectacular views?
