Why Travel Tuesday: Yi Peng and Loy Krathong Festivals

(Every Tuesday, I will be featuring a photograph from a place I have gone to, a photograph which I believe will inspire others to go out and see the world for themselves. For this week, Why Travel Tuesday features two of the loveliest festival of lights on the planet: Yi Peng and Loy Krathong Festivals.)

It's as if Chiang Mai needed another reason for me to fall in love with her all over again. The northern Thai capital city is now at its brightest, most colorful, and most magical with the Yi Peng Lantern Festival and the Loy Krathong Festival happening throughout this week. The Yi Peng lantern release which kicked off the festivities took place last weekend at Mae Jo University, an event I witnessed and participated in. Thousands of rice paper Lanna lanterns, or khom loi, flew to the serene night sky. Magical! Over the course of the week, a number of events relating to both festivals will take place, including religious ceremonies, processions and parades, a Mr. and Miss Yi Peng pageant, a fireworks show, and many others. You can download the list of events at the Thailand International Photographer Society website. Best time to be in Chiang Mai, in my opinion.

Which festivals happening in any part of the world would you like to attend? What is it about?
