The Jungle Flight Chiang Mai Zipline Experience and It Was Free!

When you are a resident of a certain city, you won't really find yourself doing the touristy things in that city. In the more than two decades I lived in Manila, I believe I only visited Manila Old Quarter Intramuros twice. When I started living in Chiang Mai, Thailand several months ago, I realized the same rule applies for cities you once a traveled to as a tourist but now live in as a local, or in my case, semi-local. Contrary to my belief before I moved here, I only got to play tourist very rarely, that is, when people from out of town visit or when the touristy activity is actually free. The latter is precisely the case with my Jungle Flight Chiang Mai zipline experience.

The Jungle Flight Chiang Mai zipline experience all started with a simple message on the Chiang Mai Couchsurfing Community Facebook Page. The company Jungle Flight Chiang Mai, one of two zipline facilities in Chiang Mai, was updating its brochures, posters, and other promotional materials and they wanted anyone free the next day to be treated to a full day whooshing through ziplines up in Chiang Mai's lush forested hills for free—from the van that will take us to the Jungle Flight Chiang Mai facility to the food to the fees itself. The only trade-off was that every bit of our move will be filmed and documented by a troop of photographers and videographers hired by Jungle Flight Chiang Mai. I don't really know if that would be a trade-off, but heck, who was I, a Filipino backpacker living on freelance wages, to pass up such an opportunity?

Before I knew it, our ragtag group of farangs, locals, and semi-locals were being whisked away on to Doi Lankah, a very mountainous area right outside Chiang Mai, where the Jungle Flight Chiang Mai facility was, and soon after, we were ziplining away along and above the Chiang Mai Doi Lankah forest canopy.

Jungle Flight Chiang Mai currently offers a couple of zipline packages. The first zipline package, which will set you back 1,990 Baht (64 dollars US) covers about two-thirds of the Jungle Flight Chiang Mai zipline facility with the zipline experience lasting 4 to 5 hours. The second more expensive zipline package, costing 2,490 Baht (80 dollars US), covers the entire Jungle Flight Chiang Mai circuit with the whole zipline experience lasting 5 to 6 hours. Obviously, we were on the second package, giving the photographers and videographers hired by Jungle Flight Chiang Mai more time and opportunity to get more footage and pictures of us acting like we were having the time of our lives. And we were. Really, we were!

The million dollar question here is: Is it worth it? Is it worth coughing up 2,000 plus Baht for the Jungle Flight Chiang Mai zipline experience? With all the other daytrip adventure activities available to tourists in Chiang Mai, like jungle trekking, river rafting, bungy jumping, mountain biking, etc., most of which cost less than 2,000 Baht, could the Jungle Flight Chiang Mai zipline experience top all of those?

Man, those are pretty friggin' serious questions! Heck, do it if you want to. If not, don't. I don't care. Seriously, though, what I can tell you is that the 2,000 plus Baht rate for this Jungle Flight Chiang Mai zipline experience might just be justifiable. Safety of the equipment seemed to me very reliable. Plus, the Jungle Flight Chiang Mai personnel who will follow you around, strap you in, physically pull you in when your speed doesn't take you all the way to the next platform, and generally be of assistance all throughout the experience, are the perfect combination of friendly, fun, and professional. They appeared to be highly knowledgeable about the engineering and physics involved in ziplining. Factor in the unbelievably gorgeous environment you will be ziplining in and the 2,000 Baht you cough up will seem like nothing. Nothing, I tells yah.

If you are a tourist stopping over in Chiang Mai, Thailand and are looking for an adrenaline-pumping, adventure-filled holiday, then the Jungle Flight Chiang Mai zipline experience is a seriously good option. Do consider it. And I say that with utmost sincerity. Seriously! If that doesn't convince you, then this wobbly, Youtube Editor-edited minute of zipline footage might just convince you. Watch it. Took me all 45 minutes of post production work! Tough.

Do you like going on holidays filled with tons of adventure activities? Are you excited to see my face on the brochures and promo materials for Jungle Flight Chiang Mai?
